Vogue Netherlands blackface editorial stirs up controversy
The news broke yesterday that Vogue Netherlands has put together an editorial that plays tribute to Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton. The 'Heritage Heroes' editorial inspired by Marc Jacobs was created for the May 2013 issue. The editorial was inspired by 2008 and 2009 collections from Marc Jacobs that featured Grace Jones and Josephine Baker. This is however not the first time that Vogue or other publications have raised eyebrows with their choice to use white models in blackface. In 2009 French Vogue faced the same scrutiny by choosing to run a photo spread featuring white models in blackface. This past February, Numero Magazine also ran a blackface editorial called 'African Queen.'
Blackface makeup is offensive to some because it is associated with racism,[url=http://www.sport.fr/smartphones/moncler.asp]doudoune moncler[/url]. In the Netherlands some people participate in 'Zwarte Piet' which is where the Dutch dress up and use blackface as part of a Christmas celebration. Blackface was used in minstrel shows for white entertainers to transform themselves into black stereotypes.
On the other hand these magazines and companies that use blackface say that it is for artistic purposes. This past Novemeber, makeup company Illamasqua was criticized for creating an ad that featured a white model in blackface. Illamasqua also used a model in whiteface makeup and said the ad was only meant to be artistic and show color contrast.
